General Notes: Deer Grove Cemetery is a long narrow rectangle running north from Dundee Road along Marie Drive, which is a renamed section of Ela Road. The gate is on Marie Drive. Just inside the gate is an open area, creating large gaps in some of the rows. This open area is the location of the old church. The ground is highest to the north and slopes somewhat steeply to the south (the old church site) and quite steeply at the east edge of the property. There is a wooded area to the east. A fence surrounds the property except on the east side. The fence that was on the east side some 25 years ago is now gone. The burials are in rows running from south to north. In 1972-73, when David Koss did his reading, most of the stones were still standing and most were readable. By 1999, many stones are fallen or completely missing, and some have been moved. Many are now unreadable. There are at least 2 unmarked graves at Deer Grove. One, possibly the oldest, is that of Anna Meiners who died in 1847, and is an ancestress of David Koss. The other is that of Anna Gesina Landwehr geb. Thalen who died about 1852, and is an ancestress of the compiler of this update. The location of these graves is not known. This update of the 1972-73 reading has been broken down into rows. The numbers preceeding each entry are from the original reading. Burials since the original reading are marked as: (new). Stones omitted from the original reading are marked as: ( + ) Notes on the present existence and condition of stones follow each entry. Some entries require additional notes and are marked with: (**). Those notes are at the end of the reading. Some stones are in German. Meanings and abbreviations for the German wording: geb. (geboren) = born (may also indicate maiden name), gest. (gestorben) = died, starb. = died, Alter/Alt./im Alter = age, Jahre/J. = year(s), Monate/Mon./Mo./M. = month(s), Tage/T. = day(s), Frau = wife, Gattin = wife, Sohn =son, Tochter/Toch. = daughter, den = the, von = of, und/u. = and. Miller Mar. 3, 1859 - May 26, 1882 --- N --- (**) 208. H.G. (stone on fence) --- N --- Additional notes: Row 1 - ** This and all other "child's stone" entries denote very short and narrow stones. All the stones having only initials are also of this type. David Koss was told that these were commonly used for children's graves. Row 2 - ** The three stones at the start of this row have been moved from elsewhere in the cemetery. One is definitely that of Heinrich Meiners (# 118 in row 5). One seems to be another Meiners, and is possibly that of Mary Meiners (# 172 in Row 8). The third stone is unreadable. Row 6 - ** The "newer' stone at # 129 is either a replacement for stone # 207 listed in **scattered stones" at the end of Row 10, or is that stone itself, restored to its proper place. The stone is barrel-shaped and may at one time have rolled down the slope to rest against the old east fence, after first having been knocked off its base. Row 7 - ** Stone # 151 has been moved to Row 10 for an unknown reason. I now sits, upright on its base, between stones # 190 and # 191. Row 8 - ** Stone # 172 - see note for Row 2. ** Stone # 206 was, at the time of the original reading, laying against the west fence in Row 10. Its present location is almost directly east of its previous placement, and it is not known which is the actual location of the grave of Mary Landwer. Row 10 - ** Florence Hoffman stone - see note for Row 7 ** Stone # 207 - see note for Row 6. |
